What does it take to get a Washington legislator's attention?
Letters and pleas won't do it.
On Capitol Hill, money talks. And unless you come up with something outrageous to get your lawmakers attention, it's not worth the effort.
Try this. Confront your representatives in the House or Senate with your face painted red, white and blue and holding up your vote. That will certainly make some waves.
And it will open the door to a candid discussion of something that's bugging everyone "skyrocketing gas prices."
Legislators and the White House need to fess up.
ASK WHAT'S THE REAL STORY HERE?
Don't let them blame it on Saudi Arabia, OPEC or unrest in the Middle East. That's just easy excuses.
Let them know that for your money, high gas prices are a direct result of their "conflict of interest" and the contempt US politicians have for the average taxpayer and motorist.
More than that, it's a violation of their oath of office to represent constituents. Whatever happened to government of, by and for the people?
We don't have time right now to wait for politicians to develop a conscience. We must break our national addiction to foreign oil. We can no longer afford denial. A 12-step program isn't' going to do it.
Three steps will be a good beginning.
Step One is already in place the greater use of alternative and renewable energy sources that already exist. They need greater support from the public. The move to alternative energy sources is practical and doable. And it makes sense for America's future.
There's a whole new US industry and job market to be gained with made-in-the-USA energy sources. It's a market that can?t be exported or outsourced. It's the direction America needs to take to end the tension, terrorism, fear, fighting and death that accompany blood-for-oil politics.
Besides that, it can help the nation pull itself out of its economic quagmire.
Step Two: Citizens need newer and more creative ways to show their anger at the growing cost of oil from foreign countries that support terrorism. The days of honey-coated messages are over -- or they should be. Frank talk and to-the-point patriotic messages about the need for alternative fuel and increasing domestic production are a must. The public should not take skyrocketing gas prices lying down. To make things happen, tell politicians to shape up or ship out.
Step Three: Patriotically correct decals for your cars and posters need to be placed in high traffic areas office buildings, plants, service stations, truck stops, schools and universities Only that way will action happen.
Posters and decals have always been an effective way to get the message out going back to colonial times. And Uncle Sam is the strongest and most recognizable symbol. During World War II, Uncle Sam said "I Want You" and a nation responded as one.
Let Sam get the message out again.
Will patriotic decals, posters and billboards appearing all around America help? It sure beats doing nothing.
